Continuing on the same note – that of potential chemical triggers found in the common food we consume; researches have found amine containing foods suspects. Foods such as aged cheese contain tyramines, yoghurt and beer contain tannins and chocolates contain the worst of all amines – phenylethylamine or PEA.
It is also now established that migraineurs have low levels of monoamine oxidase (MAO), an enzyme present in blood platelets that breaks down amines. It does not take a lot of brainwork to see the connection -> why amine foods are a near taboo for the migraineur.
